Jay Jesse Johnson is an American blues-rock guitarist with over 40 years of experience in the music industry, having recorded 29 albums, including seven solo albums. A singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Johnson has impressed blues-rock fans across North America and Europe since the 1980s.
Jay Jesse Johnson has shared the stage with blues-rock legends such as Johnny Winter, Robin Trower, John Mayall, Walter Trout, Rick Derringer, and Pat Travers, as well as supergroups such as Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jefferson Starship featuring Grace Slick, Judas Priest, and Foghat, to name a few. He currently tours with his band, the Jay Jesse Johnson Band.
Born in rural Indiana, Johnson grew up in the 1960s, influenced by American blues, soul, rock 'n' roll, and the British Invasion. He began playing guitar at age 10 and was soon performing at school dances, fairs, and venues across the Midwest.
At 18, Johnson headed to the East Coast, where he began performing in the New York and New England music scenes with the Connecticut bands Sass and Cryer. Known for his powerful guitar playing, he soon began appearing on numerous studio recordings.
In 1983, he joined Jeff Cannata and became the guitarist for ArcAngel. They signed with CBS/Portrait Records and appeared on MTV with the band's hit "Tragedy."
In 1989, collaborating with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Neil Smith of Alice Cooper, they recorded the Deadringer album "Electrocution of the Heart." This album also featured Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper), Joe Bouchard of Blue Oyster Cult, and vocalist Charlie Hoon (Gary Moore, Foghat).
In 2004, Johnson released his first solo album, Strange Imagination. It was followed by I've Got An Axe To Grind (2007), which featured Charlie Hoon of Deadringer, BJ Zampa (House of Lords, Dokken), and Matt Zayner (Dickey Betts). In 2009, Grooveyard Records released his third solo album, Play That Damn Guitar, which was included on Classic Rock Magazine's Blues Breakers, The Hottest In New Blues Rock compilation.

In 2012, Johnson signed with Shrapnel Records. Together with executive producer Mike Varney, he released the album "Run With The Wolf," which was included on the British Blues Magazine compilation "Cats Whiskers, Best of Contemporary Blues." While with Shrapnel Records, Johnson recorded two albums with the Blindside Blues Band and performed on a series of European tours.
Later that decade, he joined the hard rock band Deadringer, which released one album on Grunge/BMG and featured four Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees: Dennis Dunaway and Neil Smith of the Alice Cooper Band, Joe Bouchard of Blue Oyster Cult, and vocalist Charlie Hoon, who has worked with both Foghat and Gary Moore.
In September 2015, Johnson released his sixth album, Set The Blues On Fire. It was included on the compilation album In Safe Hands: The Next Generation Of Blues Superstars, which also featured Robert Cray, Canned Heat, and Joe Bonamassa. It included Johnson's song "Ghosts In Texas." Along with Robert Cray, Canned Heat, and Joe Bonamassa, he was featured on the cover of Blues Magazine under the title "Cream Of Contemporary Blues." In 2012, Johnson signed with Shrapnel Records Group with his fourth solo release, Run With The Wolf, which received rave reviews, reached the Top 25 Blues Songs on the Spintron radio network, and received worldwide airplay. In 2011, Classic Rock magazine called Johnson a "superbly virtuosic guitarist" and, along with Joe Bonamassa, was featured on Bluesbreaker's CD (the hottest new blues/rock).
As the guitarist for Arc Angel (CBS/Portrait), Johnson appeared on MTV's "Tragedy." Johnson also played guitar and contributed songs to Deadringer's "Electrocution of the Heart" (Grudge/BMG). Big Sugar is an eclectic, platinum-selling band whose broad musical scope encompasses blues-rock, reggae, funk, and Latin sounds. Primarily the project of founder/singer/guitarist/producer Gordie Johnson, Big Sugar has released multiple gold- and platinum-selling albums and chart-topping singles since forming in Toronto in the late 1980s, including "Turn the Lights On," "Diggin' a Hole," and "The Scene." Big Sugar's sound was initially embraced by the early '90s jam band scene, but it defied categorization, causing them several marketing challenges. Their rock/reggae/Latin-funk roots have attracted a long-standing and devoted following on the concert scene across North America and around the world, earning them a Road Gold Award. While 500 Pounds, their third album from 1995, resonated with American audiences, they had already been captivating Canadians for half a century with their intense, raw, yet musically complex live performances, never playing the same setlist twice. By the time they first disbanded in 2003, they were already a sell-out and had released half a dozen albums on multiple labels, including the widely acclaimed and acclaimed 2001 album Brothers and Sisters, Are You Ready? After reuniting in 2010, they released Revolution Per Minute the following year, showcasing the band's sound filtered through Johnson's ever-evolving production aesthetic.
Johnson, originally from Winnipeg and raised in Windsor, Ontario, honed his guitar skills in the clubs of his hometown and just across the river in Detroit, which at the time had a vibrant blues scene. After moving to Toronto, he recruited bassist Terry Wilkins and drummer Al Cross to fill in on local gigs. Long fascinated with guitar rock and dub reggae, as well as blues, Johnson strove to create a sound that encompassed all three core elements. For years, they played woods, spending their formative years as a backup band for jazz singers. Along the way, they played blues and rock gigs, building a fan base while exploring musical boundaries. They didn't release their self-titled debut album on Hypnotic Records until 1992, by which time they had become a popular SRO across Canada, as well as in Detroit and Chicago. Thanks to the burgeoning college radio scene in the US at the time, the album enjoyed independent success. Wilkins was absent from the lineup for the gold-certified 1993 Five Hundred Pounds; the recording was completed with several guest musicians, including multi-instrumentalist Kelly Hoppe. The band also added a new bassist, former Leroy Sibbles member and Jamaican immigrant Harry Lowe, who learned to play his instrument at the urging of fellow Canadian immigrant and Skatalites keyboardist Jackie Mittoo. Drummer Walter "Crash" Morgan replaced Cross for Big Sugar's subsequent US tour; Tragically, Morgan died of a heart attack onstage in Iowa and was replaced by former Odds drummer Paul Brennan just in time for the release of the 1996 platinum-selling Hemi-Vision album, which saw the band fully embraced by jam band fans and share stages with everyone from Blues Traveler and Gov't Mule to Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, and Toots and the Maytals. A French version of Hemi-Vision's lead single, "Open Up Baby," was recorded for Quebec radio stations under the title "Ouvres-Toi Bébé." The song received widespread airplay in the province, meaning that for the 1998 platinum-selling Heated album, Big Sugar recorded a French version of every single; the French songs were collected on the 1999 EP Chauffe à Bloc. Gavin Brown has suggested that it also went platinum and charted higher than its predecessor. In July, the band performed at Woodstock 1999. After an extensive tour and a break, they resurfaced with Brothers & Sisters, Are You Ready? in 2001. The English version featured the band's popular version of the national anthem, "O Canada," which often closed their concerts. Their lineup continued to evolve, concert after concert, sometimes including a full horn section. In 2000, the band released the dub album Extra Long Life under the stage name Alkaline. He worked as a producer and engineer. In 2003, he moved to Austin, Texas, and that same year, Gibson honored him with a limited-edition SGJ model.
Soon after moving, he formed the "cowboy metal" band Grady with drummer Chris Layton and bassist Ben Richardson. They recorded three albums at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studios—Y.U. So Shady, 2007's A Cup of Cold Poison, and 2010's Calling Up All My Demons. In 2010, Johnson replaced bassist Wide Mouth Mason on ZZ Top's tour and became a permanent member. He and Big Sugar officially reunited at the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival in Whistler, British Columbia, in April 2010 with a new member: keyboardist/percussionist/rapper DJ Friendlyness. The following year, Big Sugar released Revolution Per Minute (its vinyl edition included bonus tracks in the form of dub remixes of Alkaline and additional songs). The album's single, "Roads Ahead," became a Canadian radio hit. In 2012, Big Sugar released Eliminate Ya! Live!, an audio/video package. That same year, Johnson faced various health issues, including surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. However, this didn't deter him from music; he formed another side project, the blues/dub/gospel duo Sit Down, Servant!! (named after the Staple Singers' original member) with drummer Stefan Boden. Interestingly, Johnson sang and played triple-neck guitar and Moog pedals simultaneously. The duo toured Canada opening for George Thorogood and released their debut album, I Was Just Trying to Help, that same year. In 2014, Big Sugar released Yard Style, containing unreleased versions of nine tracks from their reggae catalog, as well as four previously unreleased songs. Frequent collaborator Willie Williams (the reggae legend best known for the Clash cover of "Armagideon Time") contributed to the album's highlight, "Messenger Man." The album was followed by a three-month acoustic tour of theaters with a rotating cast from the studio recording—often ten to twelve musicians on stage. That same year, Sit Down, Servant! released their self-titled sophomore album.
Big Sugar's lineup changed again on 2015's Calling All the Youth. Alex Johnson, Gordy's wife and vocalist/percussionist, had been involved with the band in a management capacity since the 1990s and occasionally appeared with them on stage and in the studio. DJ Friendlyness also amicably departed the band; his work as a guest, producer, and sideman had become increasingly busy, and he formed the band Human Rights as a side project. Hoppe also left in 2017, retiring. Austin-based conguero Rey Arteaga joined the band when their sound evolved again, leaving behind horns to explore a hybrid of blues, rock, and reggae, combined with Latin rhythms. The following year, Big Sugar suffered a major loss when Lowe passed away after a long battle with cancer. In November of that year, Universal released a Big Sugar compilation album as part of its ICON series. In December, in honor of Lowe's birthday, Big Sugar held a tribute concert in Toronto. Guests included members of Barenaked Ladies, Bedouin Soundclash, Broken Social Scene, Danko Jones, Dream Warriors, Leroy Sibbles, Mojah, Wide Mouth Mason, and many others.
In 2020, Big Sugar returns with a new album, Eternity Now, their first in five years. Unsurprisingly, it's a mixed bag, considering the trials and tribulations that lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter Gordie Johnson has had to overcome during that time.
Following the death of longtime bandmate Harry Lowe, each track on Eternity Now, written primarily by Johnson and his wife, Alex, is a narrative of addiction, depression, self-destruction, and, ultimately, redemption. Recorded at his own Soundshack studio in Austin, Texas, the first title track is a stadium rocker featuring guitarist Alex Lifeson of Rush. While the next track, a cover of Gary Wright's "Love Is Alive," is nothing special, things improve with the next version, the first single and video, "The Better It Gets," which is sure to please all Big Sugar fans. "Wonder Woman" is another rocker with a great chorus, and "Anything Is Could" has a catchy guitar rhythm and powerful lyrics. While two tracks, "New Event Horizon" and the quirky "Ultra Violet," don't quite measure up to the album's best tracks, the deeply personal "Strange Spectacular" and the final track, the upbeat rocker "Everything You Want It To Be," close out the album in classic Big Sugar style.
In 2021, they released their album Brothers and Sisters, Are You Ready?, continuing their signature sound with a heavy dose of reggae and blues-rock, a constant in their discography. Recently, the band has focused on performing classic albums in full, such as the Heated tour in honor of the band's 25th anniversary, while bringing a refreshed, deeper reggae edge to their live sound. Big Sugar remains a cornerstone of Canadian rock, fusing gritty blues-rock with authentic reggae, making them a consistent, high-quality live act. Led by Gordie Johnson, Big Sugar is a reliable, acclaimed Canadian blues-rock band known for their signature heavy, fuzzy guitar sound, blended with influences from reggae, soul, and funk. Thanks to hits like "Diggin' a Hole," they have a devoted following and a reputation for energetic, often improvised live performances, and recently they've been touring as a trio to celebrate past hits and new, socially conscious music.
